CRU’s market-leading Analysis division is seeking a talented and motivated Analyst to join our Aluminium Team in the Beijing office. This role will be responsible for the research, development and improvement of our analysis across the aluminium value chain in China from bauxite to downstream. The Analyst will be increasing and maintaining the industry contacts in the Chinese market, and then analysing the data and producing multiple market reports.

Candidates need to be degree educated and have a strong background in economics. Any prior knowledge of the Chinese aluminium market or other commodities would be highly beneficial. Candidates should have a strong quantitative background, and be a creative thinker with a robust approach to data and modelling.

What skills are we looking for?

  • Aptitude for numeracy and demonstrated analytical skills
  • Ability to identify trends and key drivers in the Chinese commodities market
  • Excellent written, presentation and oral communication skills in English and Chinese. Confident talking with market participants and presenting at client meetings
  • Ability to understand the complex processes involved in the production of bauxite, alumina, aluminium and downstream products and aluminium products’ applications
  • An ability to work to strict deadlines
  • An analytical mind-set, and able to get to grips quickly with the intricacies and complexities of data and databases that drive our business
  • Creative in the application of first principles to problems and mindful of the time constraints of a business environment
  • A collaborative attitude and a genuine interest in delivering value to our clients, whilst being commercially minded
  • Cognisant of the importance of sharing knowledge and ideas in a constructive and supportive way; ability to act as a mentor for more junior talent

About the role

  • Develop deep market understanding of the Chinese aluminium market across the value chain
  • Develop an understanding of the complex processes involved in the extraction and processing of bauxite, alumina and aluminium, and semi-finished products
  • Perform detailed analysis and interpretation of data and statistics to help generate forecasts for short- and long-run developments in demand in China, utilising quantitative economic skills
  • Collect and forecast mine, refinery, smelter and rolling mill operational data, entering the data in the supply databases and analyse results
  • Compile high quality qualitative and quantitative reports
  • Undertake periodic research travel visits to mines/smelters/refineries/rolling mills/extrusion plants in China
  • Develop and maintain contacts with key industry players to broaden and refine knowledge of industry
  • Maintain a structured approach to data collection, storage and analysis
  • Present at seminars and conferences and to clients, our research throughout the Aluminium value chain
  • Liaise with sales and marketing in promoting CRU’s products
