The opportunity

A unique and exciting opportunity has arisen in our market leading Fertilizer Team. We are seeking an energetic, highly motivated and degree educated individual to head up our Nitrogen team and be the Analysis Lead. Reporting into our Head of Fertilizers, this pivotal role requires an engaging individual who can lead a team of Analysts, and also manage an extensive portfolio of long-term market data, information and forecasting services, in a rapidly evolving Nitrogen/Fertilizer market.

The Analysis Lead will be responsible for managing a team of Analysts and collaborating with the wider CRU Fertilizer and Analysis teams. The successful candidate will also have a leading role in devising sales and marketing strategies with the CRU commercial team, based on the understanding of market needs and competitive dynamics. This is a great opportunity for an Analyst to deliver exceptional external client engagement, and to grow their profile significantly in the industry.

The role requires an individual with proven leadership skills, and sharp commercial instincts, with the ability to carry dynamic conversations with clients and prospective clients, speaking beyond the brief of their own markets. Candidates should have experience of working in a similar Analysis, or Research type role, and have a proven knowledge in analysing commodity markets, within the Metals/Mining or Energy sector. Candidates need to be degree educated (Undergraduate and Masters) – Preferably in Economics, or another numerate discipline. The Undergraduate degree (first or 2:1), should be from a top British university, or equivalent level qualification from a leading university outside of the UK. The role will also require a level of international travel (Pandemic travel restrictions dependant), so candidates need to be comfortable with this.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Direct line management of 3-5 Analysts, whilst driving collaboration from other Analysts
  • Collaborating and coordinating with other leaders in the Fertilizers team, and more widely across CRU
  • Responsible for forming the highly sought-after ‘CRU view’ on Nitrogen markets
  • Regular editing and report writing, specifically on Ammonia, Urea and Ammonium Nitrate markets. Includes quarterly market outlook services (5-25 year supply, demand and price forecasts)
  • Work with Analysts to evolve and maintain sophisticated supply, demand, price and production costs models
  • Ensure robust and independent forecasts are used to provide support for clients across the Fertilizer and commodities industry
  • Ensure output of the team (data, charts, writing) remains at the highest quality and evolves to meet market needs. Timely and topical analysis in response to key market events is essential
  • Represent CRU globally at the highest level in the Fertilizer industry, recognised as a market-leading authority
  • Regularly present at large conferences (both virtual and physical)
  • Engage in frequent, high quality information exchanges with sophisticated customers and market participants

About you – What experience are we looking for?

Knowledge & Experience

  • Fertilizer industry knowledge is an advantage, but not essential
  • Proven record of innovative market analysis
  • Proven experience of team management
  • Knowledge of fundamental drivers behind international energy and agricultural markets, with solid understanding of natural resource economics
  • Strong quantitative background and a creative thinker, with the ability to clearly express ideas and concepts both verbally and in writing
  • Probing mindset, able to quickly critique data and information
  • Extensive experience of working across multi-locations/time zones, with different cultures

Technical & Other Skills

  • Numeracy: Familiarity with handling large data sets and understanding mathematical concepts and processes. Someone who can interpret, manipulate and manage data
  • IT skills: Excellent data management skills as well as proficiency in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint
