The Opportunity

Our market-leading Base Metals team is looking for a talented, motivated and degree educated Analyst to join their team in our London office. Reporting into the Research Manager, the Analyst will be responsible for providing data, analysis and insight on the global copper, zinc, and other base metal markets.  The role will involve working on all aspects of the value chain, but focuses on refined metal, semi-finished products, scrap, demand modelling and end-use consumption.

We are looking for an Analyst that has a good understanding of the Commodity Markets, and more specifically within the Metals and Mining industry. Having a strong quantitative background based on a robust approach to data/modelling, whilst being a creative thinker with the ability to express ideas and concepts both verbally and in writing, will be highly beneficial in this role. Candidates should be degree educated (Undergraduate and Masters) – The undergraduate degree (first or 2:1), should be from a top British university, or equivalent level qualification from a leading university outside of the UK. The role will also require a level of international travel, so candidates need to be comfortable with this. As a global Company we work across multiple time zones, so a degree of flexibility will be needed.  

Responsibilities will include:

Knowledge, Research and Data Analysis

  • Keep up to date with current global and regional economic trends
  • Track key base metal market indicators including prices, stocks, demand, and company developments
  • Collect and analyse key data sets and produce 5-year forecasts
  • Maintain team’s spreadsheets and databases
  • Build end use demand models and conduct development work
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key industry players and market contacts
  • Assess refined metal and scrap prices on a monthly basis
  • Coordinate CRU’s Tin Monitor

Report Writing

  • Produce high-quality content for the team’s portfolio of services
  • Contribute regular Special Features on topical subjects as they arise

Customer Support and Sales

  • Respond to ad-hoc client and internal requests for data and opinions in a timely and professional manner
  • Participate in customer conference calls and briefings where appropriate
  • Visit existing customers where appropriate
  • Attend and provide presentations at industry conferences where appropriate
  • Actively support CRU’s sales and marketing teams to maximise sales of our products

  • Integrity - Confidence in communicating with market participants and presenting at client meetings. Someone who will quickly gain the respect and trust of our clients
  • Communication skills - Complete fluency, both written and spoken, in English
  • Numeracy - Familiarity with handling large data sets and understanding mathematical concepts and processes. Someone who can interpret, manipulate, and manage data
  • IT Skills - Excellent Microsoft Excel spreadsheet and data management skills as well as proficiency in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint
