China Copper Analyst - Mandarin/English speakingBeijing, China

The China Copper Market Analyst will collect key data and information on the Chinese copper market (focussing mainly but not exclusively on the supply side of the industry) and will create well-constructed and defensible 5-year forecasts.

This key position requires a person who can maintain CRU’s first-class reputation for research on copper in the Chinese market. An additional requirement will be to create and maintain strong relationships with a wide network of industry contacts, and successfully promote CRU’s research with existing and potential clients.  CRU operates on a global business, so the successful candidate must be prepared to travel at least 10% of working time.

Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities

  • Production & capacity data: Collect supply data for copper smelters and refineries within China
  • Other data: Collect information on technology, capital and operating costs of new smelter and refinery projects
  • Prices: Assess Chinese spot premia for cathode, scrap pricing discounts and TC/RCs (blister and concentrates)
  • Demand and stocks: Assess Chinese demand for refined copper and track bonded warehouse stock levels
  • Report writing: Contribute to CRU’s various copper reports and services specifically focussing on blister and refined production and demand, key developments including new smelters and refineries, and scrap market / policy changes
  • Topical research: Deliver bespoke research on topical issues in the form of Special Features and Market Insights
  • Client requests: Respond to client and internal requests for data and opinions on the Chinese concentrate market, TC/RCs, smelter/refinery developments and the refined copper market
  • Relationship-building: Develop relationships and maintain regular contact with existing and potential copper producers, consumers, traders and financial market participants
  • Site visits: Conduct regular site visits to Chinese smelters and refineries
  • Other visits: Conduct regular visits to customers and industry contacts
  • Presentations: Deliver presentations on the Chinese copper market at domestic and international conferences

Required Qualifications 

  • A top degree (first or 2:1) in a relevant discipline from a leading UK university or equivalent level qualification from a leading university outside the UK
  • A further degree (Masters degree and/or PhD) would be helpful, but is not essential

Knowledge & Experience

  • Experience in metals and mining, and more specifically copper and/or base metals
  • Proven ability to develop and maintain a strong network of industry contacts
  • Strong quantitative background and a creative thinker, with the ability to express ideas and concepts both verbally and in writing
  • Exposure to working across multi-locations with different cultures

  • Commercial awareness: Conscious of the commercial aspects of the role and always seeking ways to maximise revenue/profit whilst generating the best value for clients

  • Mature character: Confidence in communicating with market participants by telephone and WeChat and presenting at client meetings. Someone who will quickly gain the respect and trust of the clients
  • Knowledge: Good understanding of the metals industry and ability to quickly grasp the key technical aspects of concentrate, scrap and refined markets for copper
  • Analytical skills: The ability to critically analyse data and information.  A person that can quickly identify key trends and drivers in order to generate perceptive conclusions and unique insight

Technical & Other Skills

  • Communication skills: Complete fluency (written and spoken) in English and Mandarin
  • Numeracy: Familiarity with handling large data sets and understanding mathematical concepts and processes. Someone who can interpret, manipulate and manage data
  • IT Skills: Excellent Microsoft Excel spreadsheet and data management skills as well as proficiency in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint
