The Opportunity

A unique opportunity has arisen in our Base Metals team for a talented, highly motivated individual to take on the role of Head of Base Metals – Demand and Markets. This key position requires a person with strong leadership and client facing skills; commercial aptitude; and an in-depth understanding of commodity markets. The job involves leading a team of Analysts to produce accurate and consistent estimates and forecasts of global demand, market balances, stocks, and prices. The role is customer focussed and requires the person to promote CRU’s analysis externally.  It will also require a person with the ability to improve and develop the team’s analytical tools, work processes, and models.

Reporting into the Director of Base Metals, the individual will have 5 key focus areas as the Head of Base Metals – Demand and Markets:

Management and Leadership

  • Lead, coach and develop a team of 6 direct reports located across the world
  • Uphold our key working values of collaboration, communication, and teamwork
  • Organise the team’s work plan and regular programme of customer meetings, webinars, and conferences
  • Take responsibility for delivering the highest quality data and deliverables to customers

Knowledge, Data Analysis and Creating Narratives

  • Develop a robust understanding of base metal markets, particularly copper, in terms of structure, key historical developments, expected future trends and major players
  • Analyse data and qualitative information to create interesting market insights and forecasts for our copper products
  • Adopt the role of thought leader for the team, challenging existing ideas and promoting new concepts and innovative theories where appropriate
  • Ensure consistency across our base metal forecasts of demand, market balances and prices
  • Create cross-commodity analysis of our markets for additional insight and understanding for customers

Customer Deliverables

  • Main editor of one service and contributor to several others
  • Compile high quality reports and presentations that are clear, engaging and in keeping with CRU’s standards and formats
  • Create regular, timely Insights covering demand and market-related themes, prices, and other relevant topics
  • Ensure we have high quality data, delivered to customers in user-friendly data packs
  • Organise and maintain a high level of customer service for subscribers
  • Ensure our deliverables meet customer requirements and remain relevant and useful over time

Marketing and Commercial Requirements

  • Be the external lead for the Team, initiating customer discussions, giving presentations, and marketing the team’s output
  • Work closely with CRU’s Sales and Marketing teams, to support renewals and the generation of new business
  • Take a leading role in customer meetings, webinars, and conferences alongside subject editors
  • Secure and deliver keynote presentations at international conferences
  • Develop an industry-wide reputation as an expert in base metal demand, markets, and prices
  • Ensure a timely response to client and internal requests for data and opinions from the Team

Methodologies and Product Development

  • Ensure we have clear and transparent methodologies and tools for estimating and forecasting demand, market balances and prices
  • Partner with the Research Director and Director of Base Metals to agree and implement short- and long-term improvements to our methodologies, systems, and models

We are looking for an individual that has a basic understanding of the Base Metals industry, with the ability to quickly grasp the key aspects and drivers of demand, markets, and prices, whilst being able to construct a compelling narrative and have the confidence to express and defend one’s position clearly. Having a strong quantitative background and being a creative thinker, based on a robust approach to data management and modelling will be highly beneficial in this role, as will the desire and experience of managing and developing a team of direct reports.

Candidates should be degree educated (Undergraduate and Masters) – The undergraduate degree (first or 2:1), should be from a top British university, or equivalent level qualification from a leading university outside of the UK. As a global Company we work across multiple time zones, so a degree of flexibility will be needed. The role will also require a level of international and local travel (pandemic travel restrictions dependant), so candidates will need to be comfortable with this.

  • Analytical skills: The ability to critically analyse “soft” and “hard” data.  A person that can quickly identify key trends to generate perceptive conclusions and unique insight
  • Communication skills: Complete fluency (written and spoken) in English
  • IT Skills: Expert knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
