Metallurgical Coal Analyst - London, Singapore, Sydney

The opportunity

PLEASE NOTE – We will consider candidates that are based in London, Singapore or Sydney 

Our market-leading Steel Team is seeking a talented and motivated Analyst to head-up and become “the face” for our research of the Metallurgical Coal Market. Reporting into our Lead Analyst – Coal and Coke, this role will be responsible for the quarterly Metallurgical Coal Market Outlook, the annual Long-term Metallurgical Market Outlook, the Metallurgical Coal section of the monthly Steel Raw Materials Monitor, and our weekly Coking Coal Dashboard. The role will also contribute to CRU’s Coal cost products, research on other Steel Raw Materials markets and Consulting projects. This is a great opportunity for an Analyst to deliver exceptional external client engagement and to grow their profile in the industry.

This role requires the ability to employ a range of techniques used to analyse medium and long-term commodity trends, as well as being comfortable working as part of a fast-paced, results driven team, that is committed to delivering high-quality research to our clients. The Analyst must have the ability to produce polished, high-quality written reports, and be comfortable and confident working with a range of clients, and where possible attending Conferences to present.

Candidates need to have proven experience of working in a similar Analysis, or Research type role, and have a proven knowledge in analysing commodity markets, within the Metals/Mining or Energy sector. Candidates should be degree educated (Undergraduate and Masters) – The Undergraduate degree (first or 2:1), should be from a top British university, or equivalent level qualification from a leading university outside of the UK. The role will also require a level of international travel, so candidates need to be comfortable with this.

As the Editor of CRU’s Metallurgical Coal Market Outlook, Long-term Metallurgical Coal Market Outlook and the Coking Coal Dashboard, this role will take the analysis lead for those particular products. This will involve:

  1. Ensuring the timely delivery of excellent quality reports
  2. Initiating and delivering enhancements to these products, within the Steel team product development framework
  3. Developing and maintaining outstanding relationships with market participants
  4. Having overall responsibility for CRU’s assessments of spot and contract prices in the Metallurgical Coal markets
  5. Analysing and interpretating the latest data relating to production, trade, consumption and inventories
  6. Forecasting consumption, trade, production and prices
  7. Delivering expert quality data, and expertly present our analysis in written form, graphically and verbally in both formal and informal settings

Other responsibilities will include:

  • Maintain and develop a structured approach to data collection, storage and analysis
  • Ensure consistency in our data, forecasting methodology and our approach to analysis
  • Actively participate in the development and improvement of our analysis of the Metallurgical Coal Market
  • Actively participate in the development and improvement of our analytical products
  • Working closely with Sales and Marketing to maximise sales of our analysis products

Knowledge & Experience

  • Proven depth of knowledge in your existing work area
  • Proven analytical skills (ability to critically analyse data and identify trends and key drivers)
  • The ability to construct and articulate a well-reasoned and logical argument, evidenced by supporting data and with clearly articulated assumptions
  • First class communication skills, both written and verbal – Fluent in English
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Commercial awareness, demonstrated by a keen awareness of the current performance of your product(s) and proven ability to spot an opportunity
