The Opportunity

A unique opportunity has arisen in our Base Metals team. We are recruiting for a talented and highly motivated individual to take on the role of Senior Analyst  to focus on the Lithium & Molybdenum markets. This role sits within our Battery Metals division and will report directly to our Director of Base Metals. The successful candidate will be at the forefront of growing and developing CRU’s services in this exciting, fast-moving, new market. This key position requires a person with strong analytical and client facing skills; commercial aptitude; and an in-depth understanding of commodity markets.

We are looking for an Analyst that has a good understanding of the metals industry, with the ability to quickly grasp the key aspects and drivers of demand, supply, markets, and prices. Having a strong quantitative background and being a creative thinker, based on a robust approach to data management and modelling, will be highly beneficial in this role. The Analyst will need to have the ability to construct a compelling narrative, and have the confidence to express and defend one’s position clearly within the market.

Candidates should be degree educated (Undergraduate and Masters) – The undergraduate degree (first or 2:1), should be from a top British university, or equivalent level qualification from a leading university outside of the UK. Ideal disciplines are Economics, Mining, Geology, Engineering, Mathematics and Sciences. As a global Company we work across multiple time zones, so a degree of flexibility will be needed. The role will also require a level of international and local travel (pandemic travel restrictions dependant), so candidates will need to be comfortable with this

Responsibilities will include:

Knowledge, Data Analysis and Creating Narratives

  • Develop a robust understanding of the lithium and molybdenum markets, in terms of structure, key historical developments, expected future trends and major players
  • Collect historical data and produce forecasts of demand, supply, market balances, stocks and prices for lithium and molybdenum, using appropriate models and tools
  • Analyse data and qualitative information to create the CRU market view for lithium and molybdenum, and to generate interesting market insights
  • Ensure consistency across our base metal forecasts for demand and supply
  • Create cross-commodity analysis of our markets for additional insight and understanding for customers

Customer Deliverables

  • Main editor of Lithium Market Outlook, Molybdenum Monitor and Molybdenum Market Outlook
  • Contributor to the Battery Metals Market Outlook
  • Compile high quality reports and presentations that are clear, engaging and in keeping with CRU’s standards and formats
  • Create regular, timely Insights and Special Features covering demand, supply, market-related themes, prices, and other relevant topics
  • Ensure we have high quality data, delivered to customers in user-friendly data packs
  • Organise and maintain a high level of customer service for subscribers
  • Ensure our deliverables meet customer requirements and remain relevant and useful over time

Marketing and Commercial Requirements

  • Work closely with CRU’s Sales and Marketing teams, to support renewals and the generation of new business
  • Take a leading role in customer meetings, webinars, and conferences involving lithium and molybdenum
  • Secure and deliver presentations at international conferences
  • Develop an industry-wide reputation as an expert in lithium and molybdenum demand, supply, markets, and prices
  • Ensure a timely response to client and internal requests for data and opinions from the Team

Methodologies and Product Development

  • Ensure we have clear and transparent methodologies and tools for estimating and forecasting demand, supply, market balances and prices
  • Partner with the Research Director and Director of Base Metals to agree and implement short- and long-term improvements to our methodologies, systems, and models

About you - What skills and experience are we looking for?

  • Analytical skills: The ability to critically analyse gathered “soft” and “hard” data.  A person that can quickly identify key trends and drivers to generate perceptive conclusions and unique insight
  • Performance driven: The ability to demonstrate, on a consistent basis, that you can meet team objectives, targets, and deadlines
  • Commercial awareness: Conscious of the commercial aspects of the role and always seeking ways to maximise revenue/profit whilst generating the best value for clients
  • Project Management: The expertise to lead projects effectively, demonstrating strong communication, problem-solving and time management skills
  • Team working: Someone who can take the initiative but also perform successfully as part of a group
  • Credibility: Confidence in communicating with market participants by telephone and email, and presenting at client meetings. Someone who will quickly gain the respect and trust of the clients
  • Communication skills: Complete fluency (written and spoken) in English
  • IT Skills: Excellent Microsoft Excel spreadsheet and data management skills as well as proficiency in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint
