Transparency in aluminium sustainability data advances as CRU signs MoU with ASI

CRU has signed a Memorandum of Understanding on sustainability data integration with the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (‘ASI’), the leading certification organisation for aluminium and sustainability.

CRU’s mine to smelter knowledge of the aluminium industry and the ASI’s certification standards for performance and chain of custody are set to combine in an authoritative online reference for sustainability data throughout the aluminium value chain, increasing transparency among all stakeholders.

Lavan Mahadeva, Research Director at CRU group said: “One tonne of metal looks much like another, but their impact on sustainability might be quite different. The ASI are at the forefront of efforts to embed sustainability criteria into procurement decisions.  We want our clients to benefit from a system that seamlessly integrates information CRU provides on asset-based emissions with metrics on ASI’s Performance and Chain of Custody Standards. The easier we make it for customers and investors to access and reconcile different types of sustainability information, the better will be their engagement with producers."

Fiona Solomon, CEO at ASI added: “Availability of comparable information on sustainability issues is a critical foundation for responsible sourcing.  CRU’s Emissions Analysis Tool enhances GHG emissions transparency, while ASI Certification provides recognisable assurance for responsible production and sourcing of aluminium across a broad set of topics.   The integration of published information on ASI Certification status into the CRU Tool at an asset level provides a wider picture of an entity’s sustainability efforts.

We anticipate this additional layer of data in the tool will increase stakeholders’ understanding of sustainability efforts in the primary aluminium industry, allow comparability across the sector and along supply chains, and clearly map improvements over time.

About ASI

The Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) is a global, multi-stakeholder, non-profit standards setting and certification organisation. It works toward responsible production, sourcing and stewardship of aluminium following an entire value chain approach. To this end, ASI launched its Performance Standard and Chain of Custody Standard in December 2017.

ASI’s 170+ members include leading civil society organisations, companies with activities in bauxite mining, alumina refining, aluminium smelting, semi-fabrication, product and component manufacturing, as well as consumer and commercial goods, including the automotive industry, construction and packaging, as well as industry associations and other supporters.

ASI continues to seek engagement with commercial entities and stakeholders in the aluminium value chain from across the world. Organisations interested in membership are encouraged to learn more about ASI membership structure and how to join.
