CRU Consulting has supported Meta Platforms, Inc. (Meta) by developing a practical playbook to help accelerate embodied carbon reduction from steel used in data centre construction. Steel is a significant source of embodied carbon in data centre build-outs, spanning key structural, mechanical, electrical and IT systems.

The playbook provides Meta and its suppliers with an auditable, step-by-step approach to translating embodied carbon ambitions into procurement actions. It applies a decision framework and steel mill emission insights to help screen and shortlist lower-emission steel sourcing options by region and product. The playbook also recommends appropriate procurement strategies from physical sourcing where practical to credible mass balance or book and claim approaches where supply chain complexity constrains near-term switching.

Mike Fortier, Net Zero Program Manager at Meta, said: “The CRU Consulting team's deep expertise in steel and decarbonisation was an invaluable asset during this effort. Their commitment to partnership and flexibility ensured the playbook will be a useful resource for internal and external stakeholders to help them drive emissions reductions in our steel value chain.”

Callum Ross, Senior Consultant and Project Manager at CRU Consulting, said: “We appreciated the opportunity to support Meta through this work. As demand for artificial intelligence and broader digital infrastructure increases, the pace and scale of data centre construction is set to rise significantly, making the identification of viable lower-carbon construction materials essential. We are proud to have helped Meta convert ambition into implementation and support an actionable low-carbon steel procurement strategy.”

CRU Consulting looks forward to continuing working with Meta as it progresses its wider decarbonisation agenda and advances toward its ambition to achieve net zero emissions across its value chain by 2030. CRU Consulting will remain available to support ongoing implementation, supplier engagement, and periodic updates to reflect market developments and the evolving availability of lower-emissions steelmaking pathways. This engagement with Meta exemplifies CRU's growing body of work in data centre decarbonisation and the development of low-carbon procurement strategies.
