In the commodities intelligence business, there is a fundamental difference between analysing markets from the desk and understanding them from the ground. Recently, Martin Jackson (Head of Battery Materials Markets) and Mike Greenlund (Global Accounts Director) experienced this difference firsthand during a site visit to Lithium Americas' Thacker Pass project in Northern Nevada – and what they witnessed reinforced why on-the-ground expertise matters.

A project nearly two decades in the making

Thacker Pass is not just another mining development. It represents nearly two decades of unwavering commitment – through three lithium booms, two recessions and a global pandemic. Located in Humboldt County, northern Nevada, approximately 60 miles northwest of Winnemucca, the project sits at the southern end of the McDermitt Caldera, home to one of the largest known lithium resources in the world.

Pioneering a resource type never processed before

What makes Thacker Pass project genuinely different is its approach to a sedimentary lithium resource – one that has never commercially been processed at scale before. Yet, the Lithium Americas company isn't reinventing the wheel. It is applying proven technology and equipment, refined over decades, to a new resource type. The result – a pathway to battery-quality lithium carbonate production with an 85-year mine life.

The nucleus of an American supply chain

Perhaps most importantly, the Thacker Pass project represents something larger – an ambition for American companies to reclaim their position as lithium leaders. As the first clay lithium mine in the US, it is positioned to become the nucleus of a domestic lithium-ion supply chain – a critical piece of America's energy transition infrastructure. We are watching this happen in real time and the implications for the global lithium market are significant.

Markets are shaped by real projects, real engineering challenges and real progress. Our site visit to Thacker Pass reinforced our belief – that understanding commodity markets requires more than data analysis. It requires being present, asking tough questions and seeing the reality on the ground.

We are grateful to the Lithium Americas team for their hospitality, transparency and patience with our questions, and we are genuinely excited to watch this transformative project progress.
