Battery Technology and Cost Model

Data, Insight and Expertise

Benchmark your battery cell costs and technology against the market

The energy transition is driving unprecedented demand for batteries, and each year new chemistries and manufacturing processes arrive with better cost, better performance, or both. At the same time, supply chains are localising and cost pressure is rising across every cell producer and OEM.

CRU's Battery Technology and Cost Model lets you benchmark your own battery bill of materials and process costs against cells already in production, including BYD Blade 1.0 (2025), Gotion High-tech's unified LFP cell (2025) and CATL's 314Ah energy cell (2023). Built on our raw material intelligence and battery engineering, it gives procurement, costing and strategy teams one basis for the decisions they each own, from supplier negotiation to cell-cost targets to where to build next.

Key features

This is a working model you drive yourself. You can size costs, test what moves them, and hold your own cell data alongside the market, across a ten-year horizon and the regions that matter most.

  1. Model hundreds of battery cell technology combinations.
  2. Benchmark technologies using battery cell cost and energy density across a ten-year forecast, including next-generation cells.
  3. Run battery cost scenario analysis to see how changes in parameters, including raw material prices, move cell costs.
  4. Manage, review and update your own battery technologies in a dedicated online interface.
  5. Review forecasts for key metrics, including raw material prices, across a ten-year horizon using CRU data.
  6. Coverage across China, the USA, Europe, South Korea, Japan, the UK and Canada, including labour rates and labour cost.

FAQs

CRU builds its cell library by replicating a cells physical and electrochemical characteristics as a digital model using data from cell teardown reports available to the company. These models are then combined with CRproprietary forecasts to provide a performance and cost forecast for real-world cells.

CRU’s battery cost model uses macroeconomic assumptions informed by primary research from CRUS’s Global Economics team, including regional electricity, gas and labour costs These inputs feed into the Battery Cost Model.

CRU’s battery cell model covers a range of novel cathode and anode active materials, with bespoke modelling also available to support specific client requirements.

Policy affects battery cell manufacturers by influencing costs, strategic decisions, technology roadmaps, supply chains and emerging demand markets. CRU’s analysis assesses the impact of changing policies across the battery industry, including product, pack, cell and component manufacturers.
